During the course of these three episodes, we follow Anakin and his padawan Ahsoka's attempts to rescue the stranded Jedi Plo Koon, join Anakin's Y-Wing assault on the Malevolence, and finally go onboard Grevious' ship in an attempt to rescue a captured Padme and C-3PO. The story involves a ship under the command of General Grievous, which contains a dangerous new weapon that greatly threatens the Republic.

The other three episodes make up the Malevolence trilogy, one of a couple of different multi-episode arcs the show had in its first season. This Yoda-centric installment has some nice moments, but also has way too much of one of the most annoying and groan-inducing aspects of the series for adult viewers – the Battle Droids, who are used as comic relief of the worst variety, with a lot of bad banter and slapstick that sticks out like a sore thumb and undercuts any attempt to portray them as credible threats.

The first episode, "Ambush," is among the weakest of the series. But it doesn't make it any less frustrating for those of us who'd simply like the season set to come out now, and have to wait through these other releases first.Ī Galaxy Divided contains the first four episodes of The Clone Wars, and one episode aside, it at least mostly works as a large story. This is done with an eye towards the two fanbases a series like this has, with the individual discs aimed at young kids who will simply want to watch a few episodes (likely over and over again), while the adult fans are served by the season sets. On DVD, The Clone Wars is following the same frustrating release pattern used for many animated series these days, including The Spectacular Spider-Man and Wolverine and the X-Men, where individual DVDs are released first containing only three to four episodes each – with a full Season One set scheduled for later. However, as Season One progressed it proved to be a highly entertaining show, whose strengths outweighed some notable weaknesses. There was a good deal of fan trepidation for The Clone Wars when it launched, particularly after the mostly negative response to the feature film that spurred the series.
